Vaccines that aren't so perishable are coming soon. They've taken longer to develop than the highly perishable ones that use newer technology. What do you want, wait a couple of months longer to have only less perishable vaccines, or get more perishable ones a couple of months sooner and live with the inevitable waste? Too often people think logistics and optimization are easy (e.g. early on when people were incredulous about "why don't they just ship the stuff to where it's needed!??!" or "is it a conspiracy that they're not shipping some of this via USPS", which doesn't have the level of cold chain capability UPS and Fedex do) , but they're frickin' hard enough when everybody wants the same thing. With covid-19 vaccinations, we have people actively working against it, whether it's anti-vaxxers, covid-deniers, q-conspirators, etc. on top of the super-cold-chain/perishability issues and overwhelming demand for a limited supply. We'll know better how to handle things in the future with lessons learned, hopefully.

I know this is comedic, but just for those wondering - it's not as simple as just adding preservatives to vaccines. For one thing, they are often shipped in forms that require on-site mixing to avoid having to use preservatives. However, once mixed, they have to be used within a certain time, so that is why some of these "at the end of the day they had one left that was going to go bad" stories happen, even if everyone is being completely responsible, they have to be mixed in the batch sizes they are pre-made for. Often, you can't mix just a single dose of vaccine, you have to mix in batches of five, ten, 25, etc. so if you only have 24 people sign up one day, it's not as if we can afford to just turn those 24 away and tell them to come back when you get a 25th. So you mix the batch for 25, and then there's one leftover, and these healthcare workers very responsibly tried to find a way to ensure it wouldn't be wasted. In addition, there were better vaccine preservatives like thimerosal, but we banned that because people were misled into believing that that compound, which contains mercury, caused autism. Even though there was and is no evidence that it or any compound in vaccines has a link to autism, it was banned and removed from nearly all vaccines in order to be on the safe side/convince people they are safe. This is something that has caused problems in countries where medicine and medical access is not as good: thimerosal used to make it much easier for aid groups to get vaccines to remote places, where the medicine must often go on a long trip before reaching the intended recipient. Without preservatives, it makes it even harder to serve some of these areas with the best care and help them get vaccinated. So the long and the short of it is: "Why can't they make a better vaccine" is a complicated question. What's not complicated is this: Vaccines are good, please get one when you can, and try to encourage everyone you know to take the vaccine when it's their turn.
